Former Manchester United ace βopenβ to making shock mid-season Premier League return
David de Gea is reportedly βopenβ to joining Newcastle United in January as they mull over an approach for the former Manchester United No.1, as per ESPN.Β
The Magpiesβ interest comes after highly-regarded shot-stopper Nick Pope dislocated his shoulder during their win over United on Saturday. He was subsequently replaced by Martin Dubravka, who saw out the final minutes of the 1-0 win at St. Jamesβ Park.
Now, Eddie Howe and the board are eyeing a new, experienced goalkeeper to fill in for the England international after it was confirmed heβd be facing around five months on the sidelines.
De Gea has been without a club since he was released by the Reds in July and has spent time in both his native Spain and England, where he spent the past 12 years holding the first-choice βkeeper role at Old Trafford.
De Gea readying Premier League return
He has been keeping up his match fitness with regular training sessions and according to ESPN, he βwould be ready to accept an offer if he felt it was the right moveβ.
When his contract expired with United in the summer, the 33-year-old likely thought his time in the Premier League β as well as in European competitions β was over, but Newcastle currently sit sixth-placed and and are well in the mix for a top-four spot. Currently, they remain in the Champions League, however, their fate for the last 16 is now out of their hands.
