‘Passion and desire’: Erik ten Hag explains decision to make Scott McTominay captain vs Liverpool
Scott McTominay will captain Manchester United this afternoon when all eyes will be on Anfield for the highly-anticipated contest between the two rivals.
Bruno Fernandes’ booking in the closing stages of last weekend’s Bournemouth defeat ruled him out of today’s showdown against Liverpool, as the Red Devils look to avenge March’s 7-0 humiliation.
Erik ten Hag has put faith in McTominay to guide the side to a victory on enemy lines – something United haven’t done since January 2016. They haven’t scored at the stadium since December 2018, which came courtesy of former Red Jesse Lingard.
A Carrington graduate and boyhood Red, McTominay is certainly one player who’ll know what’s at stake in terms of pride and seeing out a result for the travelling fans. He has been granted frequent game-time this term and has rewarded the manager’s trust by making himself the team’s top ‘scorer with an unlikely six goals to his name in all competitions.
Ten Hag on McTominay’s captaincy
Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of kick-off, Ten Hag explained his decision to grant the midfielder the armband in Fernandes’ absence.
“Absolutely [he has earned it]. I think he is one of the examples of what it means to play for Manchester United, to play with the badge on his heart. He is an example, and the others can take that and build on him. I’m sure he will be a communicator; I’m sure he will be an example of passion and desire, and you need that in these games.”
