Man Utd looking to replicate Hojlund move as they dive in for 27 G/A Serie A goal machine
Manchester United have reportedly entered the fray from Atalanta bomber Mateo Retegui who just can’t stop scoring this season.
The 25-year-old was born and raised in Argentina, making a name for himself while on loan at Tigres from Boca Juniors. He then piqued the interest of several Serie A clubs when he declared for Italy on the international stage, making his international debut in March 2023.
Genoa won the race for his services the following summer, before making the high-profile move to Atalanta a year later. The San Fernando native was considered a panic buy from the Europa League winners following Gianluca Scamacca’s ACL injury, but he turned out to be one of the best coups of the year.
In his debut season in Bergamo, Retegui has been a true menace, scoring 20 goals in his 22 Serie A appearances, including a super hattrick in his most recent outing against Hellas Verona.
According to Fichajes.net, Man United are one of three clubs who are hot on the striker’s trail. The Italian’s other two suitors are Arsenal, who still need a genuine marksman, and Paris Saint-Germain who have yet to truly replace Kylian Mbappe’s goals.
As the source explains, Retegui won’t come cheap, as Atalanta would only sell Retegui for a fee that guarantees them a considerable windfall. Hence, the striker’s price tag could be around €50-60 million.
Chasing an Atalanta striker would be an interesting choice from Man Utd given how the club’s dire need for a new centre-forward is partially due to Rasmus Hojlund’s shortcomings in front of goal.
The Dane completed a £64-million transfer from La Dea to the Red Devils in the summer of 2023, but has yet to justify these lucrative figures. The 22-year-old has only scored two goals in 19 Premier League appearances this season, but many believe time remains on this side given his young age.
