Man United pair open up on language barrier after summer transfers
Manchester United pair Casemiro and Antony have been impressive since they joined the club from Real Madrid and Ajax respectively over the summer.
Both players joined when the season had already begun but they have almost immediately endeared themselves to supporters and that affection has been mutual.
Antony has started all Premier League games since he joined the club and the 22-year-old became the first United player to score in his first three league appearances earlier this month.
Casemiro has started the last four games and is now almost undroppable, especially after his masterful performance against Chelsea last week, which saw him score the equaliser in the 94th minute.
The pair seem to have struck brilliant partnerships with different players on the pitch but they do not speak English just yet. Speaking ahead of Thursdayβs game against FC Sheriff, they have opened up on the language barrier since moving to England, insisting they will study to learn English.
βFirstly, Iβm really happy to be wearing such an important shirt and sharing the day to day in the dressing room with great players and other Brazilians as well,β Antony is quoted as saying by the official Manchester United website.
βIβm going to start studying English. I can understand things and will get there little by little. The most important thing now is being on the pitch and doing well.β
Casemiro echoed Antonyβs remarks but insisted that after learning the basics over the last two months, they are capable of communicating on the pitch.
βWith the basics, we can manage on the pitch,β the 30-year-old said. βI think, in football, itβs the ball. The ball does the talking. The most important thing is our team-mates and adapting here at the club.
βThe club has been a great help, itβs a really friendly place and theyβve taken a lot of care with us.
SNβs verdictβ¦
Itβs not unusual for former players to take some time to adapt to a new league and perhaps the language barrier plays a part in that but so far, there are no signs that either of these players are finding it difficult.
As Casemiro points out, the football does the talking and both players are extraordinary at what they do. Furthermore, United are lucky to have many bilingual players and staff.
