Aston Villa join race to sign Harry Maguire after Tyrone Mings injury

Harry Maguire’s future at Manchester United continues to be uncertain as the former Reds skipper looks increasingly likely to leave the club before the transfer window shuts later this month.

Maguire has two years remaining on the six-year deal he signed in 2019 but he has slipped far down Erik ten Hag’s pecking order, making him surplus to requirements as the Dutchman continues to revamp the squad.

Maguire has been linked to a number of clubs this summer but it looked like West Ham were going to secure his signature when it was reported that the Hammers had agreed a Β£30m fee with United for the England international.

It was, however, reported earlier on Sunday that a deal taking Maguire to West Ham was on the brink of falling through as David Moyes’ side began looking elsewhere.

Now, following a serious-looking injury to Tyrone Mings in their opening Premier League game against Newcastle United, Aston Villa could enter the market for a new centre-back.

That’s according to Football Transfers, who say that Unai Emery’s side have enquired about Maguire after what could be a season-ending injury for Mings.

It’s reported that Mings is set to undergo a scan to determine the full extent of the injury but there are early fears that there may have been an ACL rupture.

As per the report, talks between United and Villa are at an early stage and the Birmingham club are not going to commit to any deal without getting a full diagnosis on Mings’ fitness.

Despite Villa’s cautious approach, it is being reported that they have told United they are ready to match and beat any other offers they may accept for Maguire.

It will be interesting to see if Maguire is named in the squad to face Wolves tomorrow as they may be an indication of whether Ten Hag is counting on him this season.

As things stand, United are unlikely to allow Maguire to leave without signing a replacement as the Reds are already light in that area.

Benjamin Pavard, the FC Bayern defender, has been the subject of one rejected bid from United and it is believed they will continue to negotiate with the German giants over the Frenchman.

Should the World Cup-winning star make the move to Old Trafford, that could give Maguire the green light to complete a move to another club.
