De Gea focused on his role rather than Henderson’s criticism of Manchester United

David de Gea is focusing on his role at Manchester United rather than Dean Henderson’s recent comments which were critical of his treatment at the club.

The Spaniard is right not to get caught up in a war of words with Henderson, just for the sake of it, when he should be doing his utmost to better his overall game in a bid to impress Erik ten Hag. That is what he needs to do to ensure he can spend the rest of his career at Old Trafford.

Henderson told talkSPORT he was “fuming” that United went back on their word to make him first-choice goalkeeper last season, but the reason behind that was De Gea started to show form as the academy graduate suffered from fatigue after contracting the virus.

When you put it like that, perhaps it was a mistake on United’s mistake part to make a premature promise but I’m sure Henderson and his entourage were demanding it from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the time.

De Gea’s role in the team was subject to criticism following the Europa League final defeat to Villarreal.

When asked about Henderson’s recent comments, De Gea insisted he is focusing on his own role this season and refused to issue a direct response to his teammate.

“I have to do my job, to try to be better every day,” De Gea told reporters, as per Manchester Evening News. “I don’t think it’s the time to talk about our team and what happened last season, we should be more focused on the season now. I have no comments about that.”

De Gea is expected to start Thursday night’s game against FC Sheriff in the Europa League.

Back-up goalkeeper Martin Dubravka didn’t travel with the squad to Moldova.
