Dwight Yorke gives Andre Onana benefit of doubt after poor start

Dwight Yorke believes the speed and intensity of the Premier League has caused new Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana problems early on.

The goalkeeper took responsibility for the 4-3 defeat against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night. It was his calamitous mistake that led to Bayern’s opener at the Allianz Arena.

Onana took it upon himself after the match to admit he has not got off to the best start at Old Trafford. The Cameroonian knows he needs to dust off the recent mistakes and hope he can make a greater contribution in United’s upcoming fixture.

It doesn’t help that Onana has not had a proper chance to play in front of United’s strongest back four, and our midfield seems to adding pressure to the defence every week.

United’s injuries in defence include Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

Speaking to OLBG, Yorke said he will give Onana the benefit of doubt: β€œMan United have brought in a β€˜keeper who wants to start the attacks and is more aggressive in trying to dominate teams with possession.

β€œWe know the Premier League has a higher intensity, balls will be coming into the box more regularly than in the Italian league where the players play at a slower pace. People have asked me why have I been so critical of Onana, I’m an individual who sees it as it is, it doesn’t matter to me who or what you are.

β€œI will give Onana the benefit of the doubt, but the Premier League is different, you will get found out by playing in a high-profile team at a high-profile position. If Onana is not at the top of his game, he will get found out again.”
