Eintracht Frankfurt boss issues apology to Donny van de Beek

Eintracht Frankfurt manager Dino Toppmoller has issued an apology to Manchester United’s Donny van de Beek.

The Netherlands midfielder joined Frankfurt on loan from United during the January transfer window in an attempt to rejuvenate his playing career. Van de Beek, 26, has been unable to settle at Old Trafford since his 2020 transfer from Ajax.

United hoped when Van de Beek left on loan that he would rekindle his best form in the Bundesliga, after Frankfurt paid a minimal fee to secure his services for the remainder of the season. Frankfurt also have an option to make the deal permanent for £9.3 million in the summer granted Van de Beek impresses.

Thus far he has managed three games for his new team and they’ve left him out of the club’s Europa Conference League squad for the knockout phase of the tournament. The German side will take on Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in the next round.

In response, Toppmoller has apologised to Van de Beek for omitting him from his revised squad for the Europa League Conference.

Toppmoller said (via The Metro): “He’s only played a total of four games in the last two years, so it won’t happen overnight.

“But I have 100 per cent confidence in his quality, he’ll definitely help us in the second half of the season.

“I told Donny that I was sorry but also what I expected from him now.”

However, Frankfurt played a behind-closed-doors friendly since the Europa Conference League squad was named and Van de Beek impressed Toppmoller with how he reacted. He scored a goal and registered two assists last Saturday.

“That showed me that he can handle the decision well,” the Frankfurt boss added.

“He is ready to take on the challenge.”
