Erik ten Hag delivers verdict on Man United’s 3-1 defeat at Villa Park

Erik ten Hag has delivered his verdict after Manchester United succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at Villa Park, with new manager Unai Emery claiming all three points in his maiden appearance as Aston Villa boss.

The hosts grabbed a stranglehold of the game from the first whistle and after taking a two-goal lead with roughly 15 minutes on the clock, United looked down and out.

Luke Shaw pulled a goal back at the end of the first half but when the teams made their way back onto the pitch after the interval, it took just four minutes before Villa regained their two-goal cushion.

United huffed and puffed for the rest of the second half but Villa controlled proceedings, ending United’s nine-game unbeaten run in the process.

Speaking after the game, Ten Hag has given his reaction to the game. The Dutchman has slammed his side’s first half, admitting it was ‘unacceptable’.

“We lost the game at the start of first half and second half and that is not acceptable,” the manager told BBC Sport.

“They looked more fresh and more ready. We need to be more sharp. The result is really clear. It never lies. Today we were not good enough.

“We didn’t get the right organisation. We created chances and good chances at 2-1. But you are really disappointed to concede at the start of the second half.”

SN’s verdict…
The disastrous start to the season aside, this is probably the biggest hiccup under Ten Hag thus far. United went nine games unbeaten after the defeat to Manchester City earlier this season but the Dutchman will oversee just two more games before the campaign is broken by the mid-season World Cup.

Unfortunately, the bigger clubs are at a disadvantage as most of their first-team players will be departing on international duty and Ten Hag will not be able to drill his squad as much as he would have liked.

Nevertheless, it’s his job to pick his side back up – United face Aston Villa again on Thursday as the Birmingham side make the trip to Old Trafford for a bout in the Carabao Cup.
