Erik ten Hag drops hint over struggling midfielderโ€™s future

Donny van de Beek has missed most of last season after suffering ligament damage in his knee.

The Netherlands international spoke recently about wanting regular game time and he is likely to leave Old Trafford in January.

In turn, Erik ten Hag was asked about Van de Beekโ€™s chances at United and he suggested that he wonโ€™t stand in the midfielderโ€™s way if offers are made for his signature in January.

โ€œI think Donny has to play,โ€ Ten Hag said when asked about Van de Beek at Fridayโ€™s press conference, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. โ€œIn games he was in the squad, so he had the opportunity. It was a slow start to the season because he was still recovering from physical setbacks.

โ€œBut he is back now and he is doing really well in training, so if you canโ€™t give him perspective then I can see he has to play for his career and for everything.โ€

The 26-year-old was signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from Ajax in August 2020. However, he has struggled to make an impact at United under the manager who signed him, Ralf Rangnick and now Ten Hag.

Van de Beek has only started 15 Premier League matches over the last two seasons. To make matters worse, he has managed just two minutes in the league this term.

The Dutch ace could be in the squad to face Newcastle this evening.
