Ferdinand implores INEOS to make transformative signing after Mbeumo, the player ‘must be waiting’ for their call
Rio Ferdinand is pleased with Manchester United’s early acquisition of Matheus Cunha and recent approach for Bryan Mbeumo but, like supporters, knows the job is far from done for INEOS this summer.
While a complete overhaul of the squad is implausible due to the lack of funds that would’ve been secured via Champions League qualification, reinforcing key areas, such as the frontline, is a non-negotiable for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his entourage before 2025/2026 gets underway.
United were dealt a blow at the beginning of the window when first-choice No.9 target Liam Delap favoured a move to Chelsea to fulfil his desire of playing in Europe next season. The 22-year-old’s Premier League experience at such a young age and cut-price release clause of £30 million made him the ideal candidate for the Reds, yet they’ve been forced to go back to the drawing board.
Victor Osimhen among a handful of proven centre-forwards available this summer
Prolific goalscorers are, frustratingly, few and far between on the market this transfer window, and with a host of Premier League sides floundering to find a striker before August, clubs across the continent are ramping up their prices to ensure they make their money’s worth from any potential sales they have to make.
One who’s expected to be on the move in the coming months is Victor Osimhen, who has returned to Napoli following a season-long loan spell with Galatasaray, and leaves Turkey with a league title and Turkish Cup to add to his honours list.
The Nigerian international, 26, rejected a lucrative proposal from Al-Hilal before they kicked off their Club World Cup campaign, despite the Saudi outfit reaching a full agreement with Napoli over a £64m deal.
Osimhen’s demands are certainly on the more costly end than most players his age, which is thought to be deterring United from making a formal approach.
Ferdinand urges INEOS to pursue Osimhen
If it were up to Ferdinand, however, they’d have done so by now.
He implored INEOS chiefs to go all-out in pursuit of the unstoppable talisman and have him leading Amorim’s line next season.
“No.9, they already know who I want. The comments know, the people know who I want, who I would go and get: Osimhen!” said the former Red on his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast.
“It looks like he’s turned down Al-Hilal… he must be waiting for Manchester United. I don’t know if Manchester United are going to come. That’s the problem.”
