Inter Milan star βproudβ to have played for Manchester United
Inter Milan defender Matteo Darmian has opened up on his time at Manchester United.
The Italy international was signed by United from Torino in the summer of 2015 by Louis van Gaal before spending four seasons at Old Trafford.
Darmian made 92 appearances for the club and scored one goal.
However, despite a positive start to life at United, the Italian began to struggle in England and was eventually sold to Parma in 2019.
The former United full-back would later re-establish himself as a highly-rated defender when he joined Inter Milan, where he has enjoyed success.
Inter currently lead the Italian top flight and this week they beat Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie in the Champions League. Darmian has made 31 appearances to date this season in an Inter side destined for more success under Simone Inzaghi.
Speaking to Radio Serie A via Tuttomercaroweb, Darmian opened up on his time in the Premier League.
βI chose Manchester United and England because I wanted to deal with a new reality. To this day I am very proud of what I did.
βI was enthusiastic about that transfer and today I can say that I am proud of what I did. It is one of, if not the most important championship in the world, full of great champions.β
Darmian then spoke about his relationship with Jose Mourinho, who replaced Van Gaal at Old Trafford during his time as a United player.
βI have always had a good relationship with Jose, I think he took me into consideration in those years, then itβs right that coaches make choicesΒ and Iβve always respected them.
βThere was a sincere relationship between us, they were choices that he had to make and at that moment he preferred other players.β
