Jamie Carragher trolls Gary Neville after premature Lionel Messi comment

Lionel Messi scored a memorable goal to help Argentina avoid early World Cup heartbreak on Saturday night.

Gary Neville’s comments on Lionel Messi at half-time were relayed on Twitter after the match because he was made eat his words.

Argentina never got going in the first-half and it wasn’t the sort of reaction we expected from one of the tournament favourites, after losing 2-1 against Saudi Arabia in their opening match. It was time for a response and a lot of pundits slammed their performance at the break.

Neville delivered a pretty damning verdict on Messi by suggesting players don’t fear him anymore.

β€œPlayers aren’t fearful of Lionel Messi anymore,” Neville said on ITV. β€œThey are taking the ball off him easily.”

However, that wasn’t the case in the second half. Messi was more involved and it was his goal that provided the breakthrough on 64 minutes. For someone who isn’t feared by opponents anymore, the Paris Saint-Germain star is doing well to score in each of his last six Argentina outings.

United target Enzo Fernandez scored their second goal at the end to seal the win.

Argentina took their celebrations to the dressing room after the match, while Jamie Carragher couldn’t help but take aim at Neville for his ill-judged views on Messi. The Liverpool defender turned pundit wrote: β€œMy mate @GNev2 is having as bad a tournament as Infantino!”
