β€˜Let’s see’: Manager weighs in on prospect of transfer dealings with Manchester United for 21 y/o

Tony Mowbray was again asked about the prospect of taking Manchester United’s Amad Diallo on loan at Sunderland in January.

The winger left a lasting impression on the Black Cats and the club’s supporters when his loan spell concluded in the summer. 14 goals and four assists had the Stadium of Light faithful singing his name with every touch, while Mowbray frequently expressed his desire to keep the player permanently.

When he returned to Old Trafford for the 2023/2024 campaign, Amad played a key role in the side’s pre-season tour of the United States as he looked to make a statement to Erik ten Hag and therefore, earn a spot in his plans for the term ahead.

An unfortunate injury, however, derailed such plans for both the youngster and United; Amad sustained a knee problem against Arsenal and that same day, left the stadium in crutches. It didn’t take long before the club announced that he’d be overseeing a spell on the sidelines.

Now, the 21-year-old is still yet to make an appearance as he continues his rehabilitation and a timeframe for his return is unknown.

Mowbray talks possibility of Amad loan

Speaking ahead of Sunderland’s forthcoming trip to face Millwall – where they’ll be looking to bounce back from two straight defeats – Mowbray was asked about taking Amad back on loan in the winter window.

β€œYou are asking the wrong person, to be honest,” he said, as cited by Sunderland Echo.Β β€œI don’t know what the plans are for January at the moment, we haven’t really discussed it yet.

β€œI would imagine if he’s going to be fit he’ll be going off to the Africa Cup of Nations. I don’t think he’d be available for the whole of January.Β Let’s see what the club are thinking of how we are doing by then.”
