Man United trio named in Brazil squad for World Cup warm-up

The final international break before the World Cup is nearly upon us and the squads picked by managers will reveal a whole lot about their intentions going into the tournament.

This year’s World Cup will take place between November and December, meaning club football will be temporarily halted for six weeks as the biggest international tournament takes place.

For some clubs, the fewer players leaving for Qatar will be seen as an advantage but United are unlikely to be one of those clubs as most players are regulars for their national teams.

United have added several Brazilians to their ranks over the last few years and now, Brazil coach Tite has named the squad for their final warm-up games before the World Cup.

According to Sky Sports, United trio Fred, Casemiro and Antony have all been included in the top-heavy squad that will face Ghana and Tunisia this month. Alex Telles, who is on a season-long loan at Sevilla, has also been included in the squad.

Fred and Casemiro made up Brazil’s first-choice midfield during their run to the 2021 Copa America final and as things stand, they are likely to begin the tournament at the heart of their side.

Antony will be hoping to impress enough to nail down a starting place as well, with Barcelona winger Raphinha seen as his fiercest competition.

SN’s verdict…
From United’s perspective, the most important aspect of this month’s international break will be to get all players back in full health, with fixture congestion already becoming a problem after the latest round of Premier League matches were postponed.

Antony, for example, sustained a serious injury in his most recent international camp and did not return to action for five months. Erik ten Hag will be desperate to avoid a repeat of that scenario.

United’s Brazilian players are clearly in good stead on the international front, with some high-profile Arsenal players remaining on the fringes.
