Roy Keane unsure about new Manchester United goalkeeper
Roy Keane was critical of David de Gea in his final years as Manchester United goalkeeper. The former club captain has now commented on Andre Onanaβs rocky start to the life at Old Trafford.
Onana joined United with a lot of promise as he replaced long-term number one De Gea between the sticks.
Erik ten Hag still hopes Onana can help United play more expansive football starting from the back, but it would help if the defence could do their job better in front of him which is a factor that shouldnβt go ignored.
However, repeated blunders arenβt helping Onanaβs case and he knows that himself.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, Keane cracked a joke at his own expense.
Gary Neville said: βRoy, you were very vocal about David de Geaβs time being up at Manchester United.β
βNo, I would have kept him,β Keane replied with a smile. βHuge mistake letting him go. Can we not get him back? Heβs on a free.
βNo, he had to go. He was making too many mistakes.β
De Gea has been back in Manchester this week to watch the womenβs team take on Paris Saint-Germain at Leigh Sports Village.
Keane went on to comment on Onanaβs slow start at United, adding: βOh, not great. Obviously a really poor start. We talk about positions at any big club, goalkeeper at Manchester United is huge.
βDavid made mistakes, but heβs (Onana) already made six or seven big mistakes that have led to goals. Itβs a long way back.
βWeβve seen goalkeepers come to United and theyβve had a tricky start and we worked with them and they seemed to be really good goalkeepers, but there seemed to be no way back for them.β
