‘That was the minimum’ – Dalot explains difference in Manchester United performance after 5-2 win
Leicester City were put to the sword in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday night. Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot believes the players had more determination to take their chances after beating winning 5-2 at Old Trafford.
In Ruud van Nistelrooy’s first match as caretaker manager, United reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a comfortable win over Steve Cooper’s Foxes.
The Reds led 4-2 at half-time following goals from Casemiro (2), Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho. Most will argue that the first goal was the pick of the bunch as Casemiro netted a pinpoint strike from distance.
Dalot was credited for assisting Garnacho with a low cross for United’s second goal and he spoke to MUTV after the match about the performance.
The right-back explained the differences as his teammates were more determined inside the final third.
“I think it was the message that we wanted to send after a defeat and a tough week,” Dalot told MUTV. “That was the minimum that we could show for ourselves and for our fans.
“I think they enjoyed tonight and we did as well. We scored a lot of goals, some good goals, and it was a good night at Old Trafford.”
Diogo Dalot has wasted chances of his own
Dalot missed a sitter against West Ham as United suffered a 2-1 defeat in Erik ten Hag’s final match on Sunday. He knows wasted chances have consequences.
“I think that summarised a little bit of this season. We were creating enough to score and win games; the difference was we probably had a little bit more determination inside the final third, believing that we were going to score.
“I think there was confidence that we were going to score. Today, I think Cas’ goal breaks a little bit of that.
“We scored some good goals and overall it was a good match. We still had two goals that we conceded that we should avoid, but overall it was a good night for us and we are though.”
