Tyson Fury names Old Trafford as possible venue for Anthony Joshua showdown
As the years have passed, Old Trafford has become a less appealing venue for high-profile events in other sports and musical events. That is largely down to the Glazer family’s negligence of the historic stadium, which is on the verge of falling apart.
Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium is preferred for events in the city but Tyson Fury, a boyhood Red, has for long admitted to dreaming of fighting at the Theatre of Dreams.
After a thrilling trilogy series with Deontar Wilder, Fury is undeniably the leading heavyweight boxer and his rivalry with Anthony Joshua, the former two-time world champion, has taken centre-stage once again.
Joshua lost both of his fights against Oleksandr Usyk and he has now been offered the chance to fight for a two new titles, as Fury holds the WBC and Lineal titles.
Speaking on Wednesday, Fury claims that he has booked Old Trafford for an evening in November but admits that that day might be too soon for a showdown against Joshua, with a December date preferred by his opponent.
“I have seen that they are trying to wriggle a little bit with the date because we officially have Manchester United’s football ground booked for the 12th of November, however they are saying that is too short,” Fury told talkSPORT.
“So, what I have got that’s even better than that is Wembley Stadium booked for the 26th of November of this year. And if he doesn’t want to go to Wembley at the end of November, I even have a December date for him – the 3rd of December at Cardiff!”
Fury’s long-awaited bout with Joshua might finally become reality and it would be a real coup for Manchester United if it was hosted at Old Trafford.
Of course, there are major concerns about holding an event like this at Old Trafford, with several stadiums across the United Kingdom seen as far more modern venues for a blockbuster event.
Old Trafford holds in excess of 70,000 people but there is no big screen, which has become synonymous with combat events as the crowd reacts to replays.
