Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has admitted his long-term goal is taking the reins at his former club.

The ex-striker remains United’s all-time leading goalscorer with a remarkable 253 to his name and is the only player to have surpassed the 250+ mark.

His illustrious Old Trafford career – which culminated in him being the club captain for three years – saw him lift every trophy on offer to him before he bid farewell in 2017.

Since retiring in 2021, Rooney has managed Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City, the latter of which saw him relieved of his duties after just 15 games.

Now, he’s keen to get back in the dugout and prove his abilities as a head coach.

Rooney talks United job

He discussed his potential future options on BBC Sport’s FA Cup tonight.

Gary Lineker quizzed his fellow England international: “What sort of job would you look for next, Man United?”

To which Rooney responded: “Well of course that’s the aim, that’s where you want to get to. Obviously, United [and] Everton. All these big, big jobs you want to try and do.”

“That’s the aim.”
